Editing the Trailer: Transitions and Scene Timeline
With the editing of the trailer I aimed to create a rhythm that prioritized mood over straightforward narrative progression.
My approach to the timeline of the trailer followed a deliberate rhythmic arc: slow at first, building to medium pace, accelerating rapidly, then decelerating for the conclusion. In the opening section, I allowed shots to hold longer than typical trailer conventions, often extending them by one or two seconds beyond what might feel comfortable. This created an unsettling atmosphere and gave viewers time to absorb the urban environment before introducing tension.
Hard cuts served as my primary transition method throughout the trailer. These abrupt cuts, often placed mid-motion, created evident contrasts between emotional states and visual textures. This approach felt more authentic to the trailer's themes of urban disconnection than smooth transitions would have allowed.
I employed sound-led transitions strategically, using L-cuts and J-cuts to maintain emotional continuity even when visuals changed drastically.
Fades were used sparingly and purposefully, reserved for the transition into the title card.
The editing rhythm synchronized tightly with the musical score, with cuts landing on bass hits, pulses, and particularly on moments of silence.
