Evaluation

For the advanced media studies project, I produced a film trailer for a fictional film titled Where the City Hides Us, accompanied by a promotional Instagram page and a documentative blog. This critical reflection evaluates how effectively my products achieve these aims.
One of the central focuses of my trailer is the representation of youth, particularly teenagers and young adults navigating identity, relationships, and emotional complexity within an urban environment. Rather than relying on stereotypical portrayals often seen in mainstream media, I aimed to construct a more nuanced and realistic representation. The characters are not exaggerated or idealized but instead they are presented through subtle emotional cues such as body language, facial expressions, and fragmented interactions.

The urban setting plays a significant role in reinforcing these representations. The city functions not only as a backdrop but as a symbolic element that reflects themes of anonymity, isolation, and hidden narratives. This aligns with contemporary social issues, where young people can feel disconnected despite being physically surrounded by others. Through the use of low-key lighting, empty spaces, and subdued color palettes, I attempted to visually communicate this sense of emotional distance and introspection. This is further reinforced through the use of mise-en-scene and cinematography, where elements such as costume, setting, and framing were carefully selected to reflect the character’s emotional states, while the use of close-up shots and controlled composition emphasizes intimacy and isolation.

In terms of diversity, while the limited duration of a trailer restricts full character development, I made a conscious effort to suggest a range of experiences and identities without reinforcing stereotypes. This allows for a more inclusive representation, enabling different audience members to interpret the characters in ways that resonate with their own experiences.
However, it is important to acknowledge that the short form of a trailer inherently limits the depth of representation. Without extended narrative context, meaning is often implied rather than explicitly constructed. Despite this limitation, I believe the trailer successfully introduces key themes of identity, belonging, love and emotional uncertainty in a way that is both relatable and thought-provoking.
A strong and consistent brand identity was essential in ensuring that my project appeared cohesive and professional. The title Where the City Hides Us immediately suggests themes of secrecy, introspection, and hidden experiences, and I aimed to reflect this across all three components: the trailer, Instagram page, and blog.
Visually, the trailer adopts a muted and desaturated color palette, combined with low lighting and shadow-heavy compositions. This creates a cinematic and atmospheric tone that reinforces the themes of mystery and emotional depth. This aesthetic was deliberately extended to the Instagram page, where I curated images that maintained the same visual identity. By doing so, I ensured that the audience could easily recognize the project across different platforms, strengthening the overall branding.

Typography also contributes to this sense of cohesion. I selected clean, modern fonts that align with the target audience while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic. The use of simple yet slightly stylized text reflects contemporary media trends and avoids distracting from the visual narrative.
One challenge I encountered was balancing creative experimentation with the need for consistency. While it was tempting to explore different visual styles, maintaining a unified aesthetic ultimately strengthened the project’s identity. This highlights the importance of branding within media production, where consistency across platforms contributes to audience recognition and engagement.

Engaging the target audience was a key consideration throughout the project. The intended audience was mainly young people aged approximately 16–25 who are inherently more familiar with digital content and are more likely to respond to visually striking and emotionally engaging media.
In the trailer, I utilized narrative ambiguity as a primary engagement strategy. Rather than presenting a clear and linear storyline, I constructed a sequence of fragmented clips that suggest conflict, relationships, and emotional tension. This aligns with conventional trailer structures, where the aim is to generate intrigue rather than provide resolution. By withholding key narrative details, the audience is encouraged to actively interpret the content, increasing their level of involvement.

Sound design further enhances this engagement and this combination of audio and visual elements contributes to a more immersive viewing experience.

Another important thing is the Instagram page which extends audience engagement beyond the trailer itself. Drawing inspiration from contemporary media marketing strategies, I designed the page to function as an extension of the narrative world rather than simply a promotional tool. Posts are curated to appear as fragments of the story, with captions that are intentionally vague or suggestive. This encourages audiences to engage with the content more actively, as they attempt to interpret its meaning.
Additionally, the visual consistency of the Instagram feed enhances its appeal, particularly for a younger audience accustomed to aesthetically curated content. By prioritizing strong imagery and minimal text, I aligned the page with current social media trends, increasing its effectiveness as a promotional platform.

The blog provides a different form of engagement, offering insight into the creative process. I aimed to make the blog accessible and engaging, with suggestive titles and clear steps in the development process it is particularly engaging and relevant for audiences interested in media production. This adds depth to the overall project, allowing audiences to move beyond passive consumption and gain a deeper understanding of how the product was constructed.

Research was fundamental in shaping both the creative and technical aspects of my project. By analyzing existing film trailers aimed at similar target audiences, I identified key conventions such as rapid editing, the use of music to build tension, and the strategic withholding of narrative information. These conventions informed the structure and pacing of my own trailer, allowing it to align with audience expectations. However, I also made deliberate choices to challenge certain conventions. For example, while many trailers rely on fast-paced editing and dramatic voiceovers, I adopted a slower, more atmospheric approach. This allowed me to focus more on mood and emotional depth rather than action, differentiating my product from more conventional trailers while still maintaining recognizable elements of the form. It also was easier from a technical viewpoint that I didn’t need to make as many cuts and synchronize them with the music that much.
My approach to social media was influenced by research into real-world marketing strategies, particularly those used by series such as Gossip Girl. These platforms often blur the line between narrative and promotion, creating content that feels integrated into the story world. I applied this concept to my Instagram page, using it as a storytelling tool rather than simply a space for advertising.
Research also informed my technical decisions, including shot composition, lighting, and editing techniques. For instance, I used close-up shots to emphasize the emotion of the main character and wider shots to establish setting, reflecting common cinematic practices. The pacing of the trailer was carefully structured to align with the soundtrack, ensuring a coherent and engaging flow.
Despite the benefits of research, I encountered challenges in balancing originality with adherence to conventions. While conventions provide a useful framework, relying on them too heavily can result in a lack of creativity. Conversely, deviating too far from them can make a product feel unfamiliar or less effective. By combining conventional techniques with my own stylistic choices, I was able to create a product that is both recognizable and distinctive.

In conclusion, my project Where the City Hides Us demonstrates an effective understanding of key media concepts, including representation, branding, audience engagement, and the use of research. Through the construction of a visually cohesive and thematically consistent set of products, I was able to create a compelling and immersive media experience.
The trailer presents a nuanced representation of youth and urban life, while the Instagram page and blog extend this representation across multiple platforms. The consistent branding reinforces the project’s identity, and the use of narrative ambiguity and emotional storytelling effectively engages the target audience. Furthermore, research played a crucial role in informing my creative decisions, enabling me to apply and challenge media conventions in a purposeful way. This project has allowed me to develop both practical and analytical skills, as well as a deeper understanding of how media products are constructed and interpreted. If I were to develop the project further, I would focus on expanding the narrative and incorporating a wider range of shots and perspectives to enhance character development. Nevertheless, I believe the final outcome successfully meets the aims of the project and reflects a strong level of engagement with media theory and practice.
